John Radcliffe Hospital Embraces Technology in the
Fight Against Hospital Acquired Infections
Ingersoll Rand Antimircobial products specified by
Carillion
The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford is the first
hospital in the UK to specify Normbau antimicrobial door
handles and fittings at its premises. The decision to
specify antimicrobial “contact surfaces” from Ingersoll
Rand is recognition that hospital design and
specification and not just rigorous cleaning play a
crucial role in reducing the risk of
healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The new
fittings feature “Microban” antimicrobial protection – a
well-established process that incorporates protection
against bacteria, viruses and fungi at the manufacturing
stage. Similar Microban® surfaces have previously been
used successfully in the food production industry to
control food contamination.
Jas Dhami from specialist hospital contractor Carillion
comments, “Carillion has specified a range of products
with antimicrobial protection at the John Radcliffe
hospital, Oxford. These products meet aesthetic, design
and cost requirements whilst having the additional
benefit of antimicrobial protection. Microban®
protection is built directly into the product – it is
not just a coating. This means that the protection is
guaranteed for the lifetime of the product, making
Microban® protected materials cost-effective and
durable.”
Ingersoll Rand's range of Normbau nylon products help
reduce the risk of infection by constantly reducing
levels of dangerous micro-organisms on door handles,
sanitary accessories, toilet grab rails and hand rails.
All of these surfaces are subject to high levels of
patient, visitor and staff transit and are difficult to
keep hygienic. By using antimicrobial products in such
areas, pathogen levels are actively reduced, thereby
reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
Dr Jean-Yves Maillard, a Microbiologist at Cardiff
university, comments, “"MRSA and other HAIs pose a major
challenge to the healthcare system and practical
solutions are needed. Health authorities are focussing
mainly on physical cleaning and disinfection to address
the problem. Whilst this is obviously important, the
built environment plays an important role. Technological
developments in building design and construction that
may help reduce the risk of infection are welcome."
Ingersoll Rand can provide entire protected environments
for hospitals and other environments demanding strict
hygiene.
