BAXI contributes to UK Carbon emissions savings trust

Baxi Technologies UK, the division of Baxi Heating UK responsible for pioneering mini-Combined Heat & Power (CHP) applications in the UK, continues to find wider acceptance of its DACHS unit with local authorities and housing associations - where there is strong drive for environmental sustainability and the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The company has seen a successful uptake of the DACHS in a variety of public sector properties – but in particular sheltered accommodation, extra care schemes, social housing developments and residential care homes. Recent successes have seen applications of the DACHS extend into other buildings including two community resources, a police station, fire station and primary school. These projects have had a strong environmental sustainability aspect in their specification and the DACHS has been viewed as the product to deliver significant carbon emissions reductions.

If operated for around 6,000 hours a year a single DACHS reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 5 tonnes per annum*. This equates to a reduction of around 18 per cent when compared with the current mix of centralised power generation in the UK and the use of heat only boiler plant
This environmental benefit has been strengthened by a recent publication from the Carbon Trust. Preliminary results from the Carbon Trust CHP Field Trial has shown that small-scale CHP technology shows ‘material carbon savings’. The field trial is aimed at obtaining independent data on all aspects of the performance of small CHP systems in the range of up to around 25kWe electrical generating capacity.
(*This calculation is based on a Carbon Dioxide Emission Factor of 0.43 kgCO2/kWe for the electricity generated by the DACHS unit, and a factor of 0.19 kgCO2/kW for the natural gas fuelled consumed and the boiler fuel displaced by the DACHS unit.)

The purpose of the interim report published by the Carbon Trust is to provide key stakeholders with an update on the performance of the CHP units currently in the trial which includes micro-CHP products for individual domestic homes and small-scale CHP units aimed at the communal heating and light commercial markets.

The key to the success of the DACHS in the UK is a result of the units being installed in appropriate applications where all the electricity generated is used on site, and in properties where there is an all year round requirement for heat to
support extended annual operating hours.”
