Wipe-clean coatings could provide protection against MRSA

The World Health Organisation recommends walls and ceilings are kept smooth and washable to aid in the control of infections. Cleaning and Hygiene are the most effective controls in preventing the spread of hospital acquired infections (HAI) such as MRSA.

Both the Department of Health and the Health Protection Agency carried out a review of EASY ON™, new durability coating from Urban Hygiene, Doncaster, and recommended it as a potentially useful new concept. It was suggested that bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus could not adhere to the coatings surface and/or are easily removed with cleaning products.

It forms a durable barrier which is easily cleaned with standard healthcare products. This minimises maintenance costs and eliminates the need for potentially hazardous cleaning materials. EASY ON™ repels dirt, oil, chemical splashes and water, resists mould, fungi and prevents bacteria and other damaging organisms from adhering strongly.

Applied to any hard surface and dry within four hours, it leaves a clear, seamless, and durable finish, with a coating structure comparable to quartz and glass. EASY ON™ increases the life and colour stability of existing coatings; protects against abrasion and erosion; is UV resistant and improves hygiene.

The coating was tested by Sheffield Hallam University’s Materials Analysis and Research Service, Centre of Industrial Collaboration (MARS CIC), who conducted the first test of its kind in determining its permanence.

MARS CIC’s Dr David Greenfield said, “We were approached by product developers at Urban Hygiene, who were looking for scientific proof to support their claims of the effectiveness of EASY-ON. We applied the coating and then repeatedly cleaned the surface to simulate long-term cleaning. The film does not degrade during cleaning and tests suggest that EASY-ON can protect surfaces for up to 22 years. It is also more environmentally friendly as it does not require harsh cleaning methods. In the event of a fire, the coating does not burn, generate smoke, or produce toxic fumes, making it particularly safe for use in hospitals".

EASY ON™ is already protecting buildings and public transport systems across Europe, and is being applied to the internal surfaces of new trains being built by major manufacturers for use worldwide.
