Sun Shield Staff boiling over?
TUC call for maximum workplace temperatures
reinforces the need for Sun Shield window film.
The TUC is renewing calls for a maximum legal workplace
temperature as Britain suffers another hot summer.
Uncomfortably hot work environments can make work
difficult, strain working relationships and
significantly reduce productivity.
High temperatures are more likely to cause accidents
because heat lowers concentration levels. Current UK
legislation does not set a maximum working temperature,
although the World Health Organisation does recommend a
maximum air temperature of 24°C for employees to work
comfortably.
The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 requires the
employer to provide a workplace that is safe and without
risk to health. Regulation 7 of The Workplace (Health,
Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992 states that a
reasonable temperature should be maintained during
working hours, while the Approved Code of Practice (ACoP)
to the welfare regulations states that all reasonable
steps should be taken to achieve a comfortable
temperature. These recommendations have lead to wildly
different interpretations of what 'reasonable comfort'.
As a result, the TUC is calling for a statutory maximum
workplace temperature, saying that nobody should have to
work in temperatures exceeding 30ºC. General secretary
Brendan Barber said: "Sweatshop conditions can push
workers to boiling point. Extreme heat is as bad for you
as extreme cold. There is no logic for having a minimum
work temperature but no maximum." "Solar heat gain and
glare from hot summer sunshine can cause staff and
customers to overheat, turning your windows into
radiators," explains Ray Copping, Marketing Manager at
CPFilms.
Apart from the obvious problems with glare on computer
screens, overheated staff are unproductive and turning
up the air conditioning or installing new plant is
expensive. Also, research in the US has shown that at
75.2ºF, accidents are 30% more likely to happen and
productivity drops by 40%." Sun Shield's solar control
window films filter out the worst of the sun's heat and
glare whilst letting in the light. This keeps buildings
cooler and staff happier. On a hot summer day, solar
film can reduce solar heat gain by up to 80% and keep
ambient temperatures down by up to 8C.
