Leonardo evolves in style
The upturn in demand for Data Centre space, and the
increase in heat loads from the deployment of blade
servers and other new IT systems, is potentially bad
news for the drive to cut carbon emissions.
It is in order to counter this trend that Uniflair has
launched the new Leonardo 2 "Evolution" range of
precision air conditioning units with a whole series of
measures to reduce energy consumption for Data Centre
cooling.
Electronic Expansion Valves
First up, all the direct expansion units: air or water
cooled, twin cool or free cooling versions, now
incorporate electronic expansion valves as standard.
Given the 24/7 year-round cooling operation of this type
of equipment, this means that lower refrigerant
condensing pressures can be used for much of the year,
increasing the system COP (Coefficient of Performance)
with a consequent reduction of over 8% in the average
annual energy consumption.
E C Fan Motors
Electronically commutated DC fan motors are standard on
all Leonardo 2 "Evolution" V-series units. Depending
upon the model, this means a reduction of between 35%
and 60% in fan motor power consumption compared to
standard induction motor drives.
With these units, fan speed adjustment to modify air
flow or external static pressure can be simply carried
out via the on-board micro processor control.
Free Cooling
E-series versions incorporate glycol cooled condensers
and a second cooling coil, interlaced with the main
evaporator coil. When the glycol coolant temperature is
below the return air temperature to the room unit it is
circulated through this second coil to provide partial
or total free-cooling, yielding energy savings in excess
of 40% in a typical year based on meteorological records
for London.
Versatility
As with the previous generation of Leonardo units, all
models can be supplied with any airflow configuration:
down flow and up flow face-return, floor return or rear
return, as well as a comprehensive range of options in
terms of air filters, electric, LPHW or hot-gas reheat,
humidifiers, LAN and BMS connections, base frames,
extension hoods, etc.
Style
While precision air conditioning units are specified or
purchased for what they do, rather than what they look
like, in the view of the Uniflair design engineers, it’s
no more difficult or expensive to make them stylish
additions to the Data Centre, rather than the same old
metal boxes. That’s easy for them to say…...
