Piller CPM Boosts Data Centre Efficiencies

High-performance power protection specialist, Piller, is now offering its new Critical Power Module (CPM), which promises a host of important benefits over and above alternative UPS system architectures.

Promising operating efficiency as high as 98%, space savings of up to 75% and operating cost savings of as much as 50%, Piller’s CPM is an evolutionary step-change in the field of data centre performance.

So what is the CPM and how does it achieve these outstanding results?

In essence, it is a full double conversion UPS (VFI mode), combined with a separate supplementary UPS path (VI mode), an eco-mode (VFD) and a built-in energy store with a comfortable capacity for bridging to diesel generators at all load levels.

Recognising the limitations of existing UPS architectures, it aims to tackle these through a design that addresses five key principles: low capital costs; easy deployment and flexible expansion; low operating costs/energy consumption; minimised intervention; and maximised availability and reliability.

Low capital costs

By replacing batteries with an integrated energy store and removing the need for air conditioning and DC switchgear, the Piller CPM reduces building space requirements and the need for installation works.

In fact, just eliminating batteries means the CPM can take up as little as 25% of the space normally taken up by alternative architectures.

Easy deployment and flexible expansion

With the CPM energy storage self-contained within the UPS, there are just two cabinets to position next to one another on site.

Adding units is quick and easy too, ensuring swift scalability as and when required. The systems can be readily configured with up to 8 units in up to 4 groups, adding units as the load increases.

Low operating costs/energy consumption

With electrical losses accounting for the majority of operating costs in a critical power system and most data centres running at partial load, Piller’s CPM is designed to deliver exceptional efficiencies at typical partial load. At the same time, the CPM provides autonomy in around one minute. 

In addition, as there is no need to change batteries at all and only one short service visit is needed per year, the CPM also significantly reduces the expense of maintenance and overhaul. In fact, with reduced energy consumption and service needs, the CPM can deliver an operating cost saving of as much as 50% per MW UPS system running at 40% load.

Minimised intervention

Compared with battery installation, the design of Piller’s CPM can reduce routine downtime by up to 75%. That is because, as noted above, the Piller CPM only needs one short service per year and even then consumables can be replaced with the module on line. What’s more, the CPM’s DC capacitors and energy storage parts are designed so that they should only need replacing after at least 10 years of operation.

Maximised availability and reliability

With batteries being recognised as the main cause of power outages in data centres and many engine start failures also relating to battery defects, the fact that Piller’s CPM does not contain batteries significantly raises reliability. By eliminating all batteries and minimising downtime, Piller’s CPM can comfortably provide both high availability and high reliability.
