Leading air movement specialist Gilberts (Blackpool) Ltd has solved the problem of ensuring effective natural ventilation in every teaching area.

Rooms such as IT suites and science laboratories historically suffer from greater ‘pollution’ than other classrooms within a school, because of the heat and carbon dioxide generated by running of computers, burners etc, which some natural ventilation systems struggle to address.

Gilberts’ solution is the inclusion of enhanced and boost options within its innovative Mistrale Fusion (MFS) natural ventilation system.

The MFS uses an innovative combination of natural ventilation principles with heat extraction within a stand-alone unit to ventilate the internal space, requiring no support plant, complex or lengthy wiring etc. A mixing damper within modulates airflow to allow the new, fresh air to mix with the warm exhaust air, thus extracting its heat without the need for an exchanger. An integrated low energy fan energises to blend the internal air.

Standard flow rates for a typical 32 person classroom of 320l/s; in enhanced mode, the MFS256 can provide up to 400l/s, whilst keeping noise level below 35dbA. The boost mode is configured for up to 550l/s- equivalent to 13 x air changes/hour- to redress to the required internal temperature and air quality. The boost also accelerates night cooling, purging the used air so ambient comfort is restored more quickly and efficiently.

Just one MFS256 unit, installed through the building façade, will achieve current Department of Education (DfE) Building Bulletin (BB101) and PBSP guidelines for a typical 32 person classroom. As the fan provides only occasional support, Gilberts calculates just 34kw/classroom/annum energy usage is required- equating to £4.08 @ £0.12/kw/h a year running cost! And noise emissions, even in boost mode, remain within DfE criteria.

That advantage is further enhanced by the ability to fully purge at even higher air volumes, to redress the imbalance from specialist activity, and maintain the environmental and noise benefits required by DfE specification, at minimal cost," says Gilberts’ Technical Director Roy Jones.

Since its launch at the end of 2015, Gilberts’ MFS has already found popularity among specifiers, for its provision of a stand-alone solution for educational establishments. It is just part of a range that has established Gilberts as Britain’s leading independent air movement specialist.
