Piller - Largest & Greenest University Hospital in Europe Trusts its Power to Piller

After 6 years of construction, the SEK 14.5 billion New Karolinska Solna (NKS) University Hospital and International Center for Life Sciences has opened its first phase of the hospital and is anticipating receiving its first patients by the end of November.

NKS is the largest, and the first public private partnership (PPP) hospital in the Nordic region, built by a consortium led by Skanska and UK infrastructure investment group Innisfree.

The new construction which covers a total area of 330,000 square metres will comprise of up to 12 floors, 2 basements with car parking and a heliport.

It aims to be the world's most sustainable hospital with around 65% of the hospital’s energy produced from renewable sources and using only half the energy of former hospital buildings. Its objective is to be the first university hospital in the world to gain coveted LEED Gold certification.

The hospital, which will be fully opened by 2018, will employ around 6000 employees and 1000 scientists and students.

Piller installed the central uninterruptible power supply for the new facility. The Piller system located on several floors comprises ten rotary Diesel UPS UNIBLOCK UBTD 2500kW units utilising Piller POWERBRIDGE™ kinetic energy storage to provide ride-through power in the event of a mains failure.

For fault tolerance in medical environments, Piller’s proven ISO-parallel (IP-Bus) technology provides a safe, compact and environmentally friendly solution.
