Unitrunk Aids Speedy Solar Installation with Short Cuts

Cable Management - Cable Ladder - Cabling Network - Solar Park

Unitrunk - Solar Farm

Cable management specialist, Unitrunk, has provided specially cut cable ladder and channel for the installation of cabling network at a new solar park in Bridgehampton.

The British Solar and Renewables Ltd site near Yeovil in Somerset, has been constructed on 22.74 hectares of former grazing land and will provide an optimum output of 11.47mW for a service life of 25 years.

Design of the solar park included provision for low profile erection of the panels to minimise overshadowing of neighbouring hedgerows. Contractor, Sphere Electrical contacted Unitrunk to find out whether they could supply channel pre-cut to 1.5m lengths and cable ladder pre-cut to 1.2 metre lengths, in preference to standard 3 metre lengths to aid this low profile installation.

Explains Barry Milne from Sphere Electrical: "While we would usually make frames for the cabling infrastructure using channel, to meet the delivery times and design criteria for the solar park at Bridgehampton we decided to explore the possibility of installing shorter lengths of ladder into the ground onto which to secure the cables.

"Unitrunk was the only supplier we found that could provide these special lengths for us, ensuring complete consistency across the installation and speeding up the installation process with no cutting required on site."

The special lengths of channel and cable ladder were supplied with standard bends to enable construction of the cable management infrastructure on site. The cable ladder was recessed into the ground and secured to the solar panel supports.

Barry adds: "This solution meant that we could avoid the health and safety, time and skills implications of cutting channel and cable ladder on site. Unitrunk made delivering the scheme much quicker and easier for us."
