Unitrunk’s Rapid Installation Systems (RIS) cable management has been used to install the highly specified building services requirements of the new £30 million ‘Discovery’ biosciences scheme constructed as part of BioCity, the UK’s largest bioscience incubator.

Developed for Nottingham City Council as part of the city’s Economic Growth Plan, the new Discovery Building has been constructed adjacent to BioCity, to create more space for the sector to grow in Nottingham and provide around 200 science-based jobs.

Designed by architect, CPMG, the 50,000 sq ft building provides a mix of offices and research facilities across four floors, with a 5th floor roof terrace for the plant room. Briggs & Forrester was appointed as the project’s mechanical and electrical contractor by main contractor, Willmott Dixon, with much of the cable management installation being subcontracted to Loughborough-based A&A Electrical.

Unitrunk’s Uniklip RIS cable tray system was installed for the sub mains cabling throughout the building, including two risers on each storey. The tool-free Easy Connect and Uniklip systems, which simply clip together with no requirement for nuts and bolts, speeded up installation considerably.

The building has no floor voids, so Unitrunk’s Easy Connect cable basket system was installed at high level to provide all the containment for data cabling, fire alarm systems, security, CCTV and door access. Small power and lighting cabling, meanwhile, have been installed using single compartment trunking.

Along with Easy Connect’s innovative integrated coupler system, which provides rapid and robust tool-free connections between lengths of tray, this also speeded up the installation process.

Comments Nick Heath from Briggs & Forrester: "This building will play a major role in bringing bio science-based jobs to Nottingham and has been specified as a showpiece laboratory workplace. As a result, it is very heavily serviced for a building of this size, with 78 individually-serviced fume cupboards across three floors. By using Unitrunk’s Easy Connect and UniKlip rapid installation systems we were able to reduce installation times by more than a third, helping to ensure we delivered the scheme within the business critical programme."
